For Better or Worse,
CEO Support Is Key

('The aggrandizement of oracles')

KALAMAZOO, Mich., Nov. 1—CEO involvement in the key corporate communique—the annual report to shareholders—is vital to success of the document.

That's the message in the November issue (No. 171) of Sid Cato's long-running Newsletter on Annual Reports, published here.

Cato cited (Pg. 1) CEOs of Ameritech, St. Paul Cos. and Armco for their involvement in the year's three best reports.

He decried, though (Pg. 3), the "aggrandizement of oracles" -- specifically, General Electric's Jack Welch, Intel's Andrew Grove, Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffett...and, "for bad measure," Walt Disney's Michael Eisner.

With the exception of Grove, he said "each has trouble speaking his piece and getting off stage." He said Disney's "long-winded" letter ran over 10 pages, GE's seven, "though Intel's is only a page long." Cato said he doesn't receive the Berkshire report.

Subscribers to his newsletter include corporate chieftains as well as vice presidents for communications and finance, along with annual report producers around the world.
