IT'S 'BACK TO BASICS'
IN DQE ANNUAL REPORT

MARSHALL, Mich., June 1, 2002.—In the 226th consecutive issue of his "incredibly esoteric" Newsletter on Annual Reports (aimed at producers of the key corporate communiqué) Sid Cato hailed the 2001 report of Pittsburgh-based DQE Inc.

He similarly praised the annuals of two relatively unknown companies, Pineville, Louisiana's Cleco Corp., and Missouri-based Leggett & Platt.

He took to task the report of Washington Post Co., though he had kind things to say about Ben Bradlee "of Watergate fame; he was one of the good guys," who penned a special piece for the report.

Entitled "The Biggest Story of the 21st Century—If We're Lucky," it dealt with Sept. 11, 2001, and its impact on the world, including the Post's newspaper arm.

Cato also had nice things to say about the work of Chicago-based Meta-4, a design firm specializing in annual reports, but "From the reject pile" took to task companies from Xcel Energy to Goodyear to Roadway. He was a tad kinder to Twin Cities-based Ecolab, whose annual, he said, contained "many pluses."
